Have your say in the development of the Product Environmental Footprint Category Rules for Fresh Produce

The Technical Secretariat (TS) of the FreshProducePEFCR, which is developing technical rules for calculating the environmental footprint of fruits and vegetables as part of Freshfel´s Environmental Footprint Initiative, is organizing an open webinar to mark the launch of the project´s 1st Public Consultation. The developers of the PEFCR will open the 1st Open Public Consultation by 2 April 2024. During this Public Consultation, the sector’s feedback is very valuable.

The CIV - Italian Breeders' Consortium, based in San Giuseppe di Comacchio (FE), specialized in varietal innovation and strawberry breeding, is focusing its efforts on developing the SHAYDA® CIVL519pbr variety in Spain, arousing keen interest among producers and exporters in the Iberian Peninsula. The new variety, suitable for Mediterranean climates, is proving to be one of the most interesting proposals in the Huelva area.

Freshfel Europe Warns of Impact on EU-GB trade of Defra's proposed regulatory changes

On 8 March 2024, Freshfel Europe submitted its response to the consultation launched by Defra on the proposed changes to Annex 11 of the retained Implementing Regulation 2019/2072 which, if adopted, will impose checks and other unnecessary controls on half of all EU fresh fruit and vegetable exports to the Great Britain.

Compromise on the new EU Packaging law will lead to unprecedented, grievous effects on the functioning of the Single Market and dramatically damage fresh produce consumption. After reviewing the content of the preliminary agreement of the Trilogue between the European Council European Parliament and Commission on the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) Freshfel Europe is baffled to see the escalation of policy incoherencies and the unfair discrimination towards fresh produce.

International Rootstocks Symposium to be held at Macfrut 2024

As part of the Plant Nursery Area, the International Rootstocks Symposium will take place on May 8th and 9th. This event is dedicated to genetic innovations in the rootstock sector, during which the results of 25 international projects on apple, pear, stone fruit, and citrus fruit trees will be presented. Italy is the European leader in fruit nurseries, with an annual production of 330 million strawberry plants, over 50 million fruit plants, and an equivalent number of rootstocks.

EU Packaging Regulation: the position paper of Pro Food and other industry representatives

Representatives of leading European fruit and vegetable supply chain organizations, gathered by Pro Food in a roundtable discussion on PPWR at the Fruit Logistica trade fair in Berlin, agreed to reiterate the need for a non-ideological, data-driven approach. The proposed Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) has reached its final stages with the confrontation between the two positions expressed in late 2023 by the European Parliament and the EU Council.
