International Year of Fruits and Vegetables 2021

The FAO has just launched the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables.
Throughout 2021, several activities and events will be organized all over the world to raise awareness for the vital role of fruits and vegetables in healthy nutrition and food security, together with the importance of reducing food loss and waste, and promoting sustainable production of fruits and vegetables.

Moving towards healthier diets while making our food production more sustainable is an objective that the growing media sector already contributes to. More and more fruits and vegetables are grown ingrowing media since it helps reaching this objective and several others:

 Growing media contributes to answer the increasing worldwide demand for fruits and vegetables, guaranteeing food security and reducing food loss and waste.

 When growing media are used in protected cultivation systems, weather conditions have less impact.

 The necessary input of fertilisers, plant protection products and water per amount of harvested produce is much lower than in open field agriculture. Growing media can often circumvent the perils of many soil-borne diseases typically developing under high pressure growing methods in the open field.

 The reduced land-use footprint is yet another advantage of soilless growing.

 While the working conditions are more favourable, less labour is required compared to growing the same crops in the ground.

 The use of growing media also enables horticulture in areas where conventional open field growing is climate-wise impossible or economically not viable.

Over 6,000 artworks for the Marlene contest

Over 6,000 images from 36 countries and 25,000 likes received by the gallery on the website, which brings together all the “artworks” that have arrived in Terlano. These are the figures for a successful initiative: the international digital contest launched by VOG to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Marlene®, the South Tyrolean Consortium’s flagship brand. Launched on 15 September and concluded two months later on 15 November, the contest gave consumers the opportunity to express Marlene®’s values and illustrate what the Daughter of the Alps apple represents to them. »

TSW will take place on April 23-24, 2021

For the sake of participants’ security and good quality of Fruit and Vegetable Industry Fair, the organizers decided to postpone TSW 2021. The event, initially planned for January 2021, will take place on April 23-24, 2021. The change of the date will enable the participants to benefit the most from the participation in the event, while being provided with safe conditions. The decision to change the TSW date was taken after consulting the exhibitors, partners and representatives of the fruit and vegetable industry. »

From creative communication to a harvest forecast via app

The spectrum of topics at the first digital edition of the Digital Days for the Apple Economy was as diverse as its audience. On November 19 and 20, 1.000 participants from over 50 countries followed the events and interacted with one another in a digital matchmaking event, proving that new digital event formats can create a meeting place for the international economy and maintain the important exchange between operators. At the heart of the digital event program there was of course the world-famous Interpoma Congress. »
