From 18 to 27 January some 500 exhibitors, from the coast to the Alps, will be presenting their own regional delicacies, with plenty of local colour too. Thirteen of Germany’s federal states are represented in eight halls on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds, showing the wide range of regional food, beverages and luxury products that are available. In settings reflecting their own particular landscapes. Local specialities with a typical regional flavour are being exhibited by Baden-Württemberg (Hall 5.2b), Bavaria (22b), Berlin (21b), Brandenburg (21a), Hesse (22a), Mecklenburg-West Pomerania (5.2b), Lower Saxony (20), North Rhine-Westphalia (5.2a), Rhineland-Palatinate (2.2), Saxony (21b), Saxony-Anhalt (23b), Schleswig-Holstein (22a) and Thuringia (20).

The dishes being served here include lentils with noodles, Baden-style shoulder of meat, sausage salad, Black Forest gateau and the famous ‘ofenschlupfer’, a traditional recipe using left-over bread, apples and spices. Visitors can also feast on original Swabian pasta squares, full-flavoured Black Forest ham, fine wines from Baden and Württemberg, delicious fruit juices and hearty beers.

Bavaria – a delight
Bavaria is on display in Hall 22b, where visitors can experience all the diversity of Germany’s largest state. An area of 2,300 square metres features typical Bavarian delicacies, traditional customs and glimpses of the attractive countryside in all of the state’s different regions. There is something for everyone here, from a wide selection of cheeses to Franconian wines, the finest speciality dumplings, unusual apple balsam vinegar and high quality products made with alpaca wool. Connoisseurs can enjoy new cuts of meat from Strohschein and from cattle that graze on pastureland all year round year: “Bavaria – a delight”.

Berlin - diverse, creative, sustainable
The Berlin hall, No. 21b, has a fresh new design and features creative start ups with some original regional and seasonal products. Using the slogan “Berlin – diverse, creative, sustainable” one of the exhibitors, Neuköllner Chilisaucen-Manufaktur, has a range of hot condiments that includes “Crazy Bastard Sauce”. “Strassenbräu” from Friedrichshain is a brewery producing craft beer and has created Araka, a special pumpkin-based autumn and winter brew for the Green Week. The brand new seasonal beers with ingredients from Berlin include such aromas as citrus, grapefruit and tropical fruits.

Brandenburg
For ten days the Brandenburg hall, No. 21a, is the main meeting place for the state’s agriculture and food industry, with some 80 exhibitors. The joint presentation by Prignitz and Ostprignitz-Ruppin combines two major topics for 2019. These two counties are joining forces in preparation for the state garden show in Wittstock and the events commemorating the writer Theodor Fontane, who was born 200 years ago in Neuruppin. January 21 is the Brandenburg Day, with an official opening by the state’s premier, Dietmar Woidke, and the minister of agriculture Jörg Vogelsänger.

Hesse: Regional specialities with a seal of quality
Typical Hesse: Delicious apple wine, hearty beers, refreshing mineral water from the Rhön, ahle sausage and a wide variety of cheeses can be enjoyed in the Hesse hall, No. 22a. The inclusion of the regional seal of quality “Geprüfte Qualität – HESSEN” and the organic seal of approval “Bio-Siegel – HESSEN” on products is a guarantee of certified quality, safety and transparency all the way from the production stage to the retail outlet.

Enjoy Mecklenburg-West Pomerania
Taking part for the twentieth time: In Hall 5.2b the slogan “Enjoy Mecklenburg-West Pomerania” applies to a region that sees itself as a location with an international appeal for agriculture and the food industry. Its culinary specialities include such traditional delights as rollmops herrings, roast meat in a red wine marinade and served in a roll, and beers which have won numerous awards. Visitors can also sample such unusual items as bean-to-bar chocolates, hand-made truffles, an organic apple and quince chutney and ostrich meat sausage.

Lower Saxony – scenic and cultural diversity in the heart of Germany. The bar by the name of “Schnuckenschänke” provides a cosy atmosphere where guests can enjoy typical regional specialities, exquisite coffee produced in Hannover and freshly served beers from various breweries in Lower Saxony. Many small manufacturers from all over the state are serving such tasty delights as jams, sausages, dairy products, fruit juices, home-made produce and much more besides.

North Rhine-Westphalia: City. Countryside. River
Beers as diverse as Cologne’s kölsch or Westphalia’s festbier, asparagus from the Lower Rhine or rapeseed oil from Ostwestfalen-Lippe, curry sausage from the Ruhr region or syrups made from sugar beet or apples from the Rhineland, milk or local eggs – you can really eat well in North Rhine-Westphalia. More than 100 different producers are represented with their delicacies in their state’s hall, No. 5.2a. North Rhine-Westphalia features a colourful combination of delicious food and beverages, nature, agriculture and rural regions. The display also has a new slogan: “North Rhine-Westphalia. City. Countryside. River”.

Rhineland-Palatinate: Wines, sparkling wines and much more besides
Rhineland-Palatinate is renowned as Germany’s premier wine producing region. Around two thirds of all Germany’s vineyards are situated along the Rhine and its tributaries, in the six wine-producing regions of Rheinhessen, Pfalz, Mosel, Nahe, Ahr and Mittelrhein. This region has plenty to satisfy lovers of elegant rieslings as well as those who prefer fruitier wines. Various regional delicacies from Rhineland-Palatinate are being served in the state’s Wine Lounge in Hall 9 as a suitable accompaniment to the wines. The adjoining ’WeinWerk’ display features ten vineyards and wineries with the best that their cellars can offer.

Enjoy Saxony with all your senses
In Hall 21b the slogan is once again “Enjoy Saxony”, with opportunities to enjoy some of the state’s particular culinary delights. With items ranging from tasty sausage and meat products, full flavoured beers and  lemonade with cucumber , as well as tornado potatoes, the Saxony hall has something to suit every palate. The names of such confectionery as Freiberger eierschecke cake, or klecksel and butter cakes from Saxony have a particular appeal to anyone with a sweet tooth, and are just some of the reasons why this state is known as “Germany’s bakery”.

Saxony-Anhalt – culinary diversity
In 2019 Saxony-Anhalt is again represented in Hall 23b with more than 80 exhibitors. The 2018 winners of the competition “Culinary Saxony-Anhalt” are being presented in 15 different product categories, together with the ”Culinary Star Box 2018”.
