Koelnmesse starts operating Cologne's largest inner-city photovoltaic system

500 photovoltaic modules mounted on the newly opened Confex building at Koelnmesse convert sunlight into green electricity. Cologne's largest inner-city photovoltaic system is now being added to the roof of Hall 11. Comprising 4,800 modules, it promises an annual yield of around two million kilowatt hours (kWh). Another large-scale system is already under construction. "Starting operation of this large photovoltaic system is an important step on our way to a sustainable energy supply," says Gerald Böse, CEO of Koelnmesse GmbH.

The apple season about to begin will not be without its challenges. This is what emerged from Prognosfruit 2024, the annual itinerant conference during which the WAPA, the “World Apple and Pear Association”, publishes its forecasts for the upcoming apple harvest throughout Europe. The general picture that emerged from Budapest, where the event was held this year, was one of a decrease in most producer countries, with a crop expected at 10,21 million tonnes, a reduction of 11,3% compared to the previous year.

The Prognosfruit Conference is Europe’s leading annual event for the apple and pear sector, gathering apple and pearexperts from across Europe and beyond. Prognosfruit 2024 is currently taking place in Budapest, Hungary. Duringtoday’s conference, WAPA (World Apple and Pear Association) released its forecast for the upcoming season of2024/2025. The forecast for apples is set at 10,2 million t, 11,3% lower than last year. The pear crop shows a slightrecovery from 2023, increasing by 4,9% to 1,79 million t.
