Macfrut Academy, a new video lesson on the Chilean cherry

23 October 2024

Thursday, October 24 at 5 p.m. - Technologies and solutions for global exports: the case of the Chilean cherry supply chain

The Chilean cherry supply chain is the focus of the new episode of Macfrut Academy, the innovative platform promoted by Macfrut, the international fruit and vegetable fair scheduled in Rimini from May 6 to 8, 2025. Appointment on Thursday, October 24, at 5 p.m. (Italian time) for the video lesson dedicated to one of the world's leading cherry production sectors. More in detail, the episode focuses on post-harvest process, with a focus on the technologies that enable the export of 90% of this fruit globally

The Chilean cherry, thanks in part to increasingly intelligent machines, has managed to conquer distant markets and secure a leadership role. In the video lesson, it is possible to follow the cherry through its supply chain journey, from the field to the warehouse. The process begins at the cherry orchard and ends at the packing facility, where the first steps include unloading the crates and bins and cooling the product. The subsequent stages involve water processing, where leaves are removed, and stems are separated, leading to the crucial selection phase, where technology reaches its peak.

Sorting machines analyse the fruit, selecting them according to internal and external quality parameters using non-destructive techniques. The cherries are then sent to packaging: in the video lesson, the significant advances in automation and improvements in palletizing and shipping the product are examined.

Juan Pablo Zoffoli, professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, explains the pillars of post-harvest. Unitec presents the evolution of the processing and sorting line, while Graziani Packaging focuses on product palletizing. The episode also features exclusive interviews with managers of major Chilean players and a guide on preparing loads for export.
