A new flow wrap packaging culture

25 April 2022
It's called “Flow wrap packaging: the most with the least. High protection, low impact.” A white paperthat analyses all the opportunities and properties of functional packaging, also in terms of sustainability. To be presented on 5th May at Ipack-Ima

A technical-scientific project to investigate the evolution of flow wrap packaging, from its birth to possible future evolutions. The study, curated by two researchers of the Politecnico di Torino in collaboration with several leading companies and specialised groups in the packaging sector, led to the publication of a White Paper entitled “Flow wrap packaging: the most with the least. High protection, low impact.”

The aim of the paper is to present and analyse the consolidated, but also lesser-known aspects of flow wrap packaging on which to focus the attention of various audiences, from the scientific community to the international packaging production chain and even consumers themselves, for up-to-date critical thinking.

The idea for a White Paper was based on the intuition of Riccardo Cavanna, a renowned representative of the packaging machine industry. “This was the first step in a more extensive process,” explains Cavanna, “which will continue over time and lead to a reflection on the various scenarios for the production and use of flow wrap packaging, focusing on the theme of sustainability.A culture of the functionality and importance of packaging is certainly lacking, but so too is an awareness of the opportunities afforded by technology in promoting a genuinely circular economy. If we look at the seas of plastic and their powerful effect on the collective imagination,” continues Cavanna, “we need to ask ourselves whether the blame truly lies with plastics alone, or whether this ecological impact should actually be attributed to a currently dysfunctional circular economy, as well as poor consumer education.”

The White Paper is scheduled to be presented on Thursday 5th May at 5.30pm, in Hall 2 at Fiera Milano during Ipack-Ima, the trade show specialised in food and non-food processing and packaging taking place from 3rd to 6th May at Rho. The paper is divided into several specific sections: contributions by university professors and researchers, company stories, testimonies, and a focus on packaging and sustainability.

“The paper is a means of promoting the culture of flow wrap packaging, and is intended for professionals and non-professionals alike,” specify the curators, Doriana Dal Palù and Beatrice Lerma, researchers of the Politecnico di Torino. “Our study investigated the role – in the production and design sectors, in society and among consumers, from the past to the future – of flow wrap packaging, a type of packaging that perfectly represents the flexible packaging industry. This paper essentially seeks to present and summarise the key stages in the evolution of this packaging, the current and future challenges, strictly linked to the invention of new materials and innovations in the field of production technologies, but also new ways of containing and selling, of consuming and communicating, today increasingly geared towards sustainable recyclable and/or compostable solutions.”
