Southern Hemisphere Fresh Fruit Exports to Russia and Ukraine

SHAFFE – The Southern Hemisphere Association of Fresh Fruit Exporters has reviewed the Russian and the Ukrainian fresh fruit import markets and expects increasingly difficult conditions to maintain supply to both markets. In 2020, Ukraine imported 795 million USD of fresh fruit with over 48% originating from suppliers like Turkey (citrus), Ecuador and Costa Rica (bananas and pineapples). Total exports of fresh fruit from SHAFFE member countries reached USD$54 million in 2020, representing 7% of total fruit imports market in the Ukraine.

Demand for organic produce in the United Arab Emirates continues to grow and is expected to increase by 13% between now and 2024, mainly driven by fresh fruit and vegetables, already a must for over 50% of the local population. “In our experience, sustainability, origin and brand name are the key factors that shape the purchasing decisions of the inhabitants of the United Arab Emirates when buying organic products – explained Werner Castiglioni, director of Biosüdtirol, a VOG Consortium cooperative dedicated exclusively to the production of organic apples.

World Apple and Pear Association (WAPA) presents annual Southern Hemisphere crop forecast

On the occasion of its Annual General Meeting, the World Apple and Pear Association (WAPA) has released the Southern Hemisphere apple and pear crop forecast for the upcoming season. According to the forecast, which consolidates the data from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, New Zealand, and South Africa, apple and pear production is estimated to decrease by 7% and 6% respectively in 2022 compared to the previous year. WAPA has released its 2022 apple and pear crop estimate for the Southern Hemisphere.

Africa Days: Sub-Saharan Africa in the spotlight at Macfrut

In fact, Macfrut will be hosting Africa Days, a number of initiatives aimed at exploring development opportunities for the fruit and vegetable sector in Africa, which will be organised in collaboration with the Italian Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, AICS (Italian Agency for Development Cooperation), ICE-Agenzia – Italian Trade Agency, UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organisation) and in partnership with Confindustria Assafrica & Mediterraneo.

Future Crops Sowing Proprietary Basil Seeds of Growth

AgriTech start-up Future Crops, Ltd., an Israeli-Dutch venture, is boosting output of a pure, high-yielding basil variety it successfully adapted for cultivation in the company’s primarily solar powered 2,000m2 vertical farm. The advanced, clean-farming technique for this aromatic basil variety will impart a long shelf life and secure a steady supply of locally grown, pesticide-free herb to the European market. The proprietary seeds were developed at the Israeli Agricultural Research Organization (ARO) by Nativ Dudai, PhD, professor and head of The Unit of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants.

International Cherry Symposium, digital press conference
