CROP FORECASTS

The World Apple and Pear Association (WAPA) held its Annual General Meeting on Friday morning 5 February at the Fruit Logistica in Berlin. Representatives of the key global apple and pear producing and exporting countries met to discuss the Southern Hemisphere production forecast as well as the final Northern Hemishpere and other matters currently on the Association’s agenda. WAPA released in Berlin its annual consolidated crop forecasts for the forthcoming southern hemisphere apple and pear seasons (see tables below). Collected from industry groups in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Chile, New Zealand and South Africa, the forecast showed that the 2016 apple and pear Southern Hemisphere crops are expected to reach 5.298.000 MT and 1.378.000 MT, respectively. For apples, this represents a decrease of 2% on the 2015 crop; while forecasted export figures increase by 6% to 1.630.382 MT. For pears, decrease of 8% on the 2015 crop is recorded while forecasted export figures are expected to have decreased with 1% at 684.582 MT. More details per country and per variety can be found attached below. As an additional note, the figures for Chile are the provisional figures. These figures are most likely to change slightly in the course of the next month(s). All data are presented in metric tonnes.

WAPA was founded in August 2001 with the objectives of providing a forum for discussion on matters of interest to the apple and pear business and initiating recommendations to strengthen the sector. The current President of the Association is Daniel Sauvaitre of ANPP in France and Todd Fryhover is Vice-President from the Washington Apple Commission in the United States. WAPA membership includes the following countries and areas: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Scandinavia, Slovenia, South Africa, the UK and the USA.

A test field of around 3,000 m² at Macfrut 2024

At Macfrut, the sector’s innovations will be on display in an area of around 3,000 square metres, divided into two halls: one dedicated to fruit growing (Hall C1 - Agri Field Solution) and the other to soilless production techniques, commercial and industrial horticulture, and mechanisation (Hall A1 – Machinery Solutions). ‘Both of these areas allow visitors to see for themselves what they can put into practice on their own farm,’ says Luciano Trentini, an experienced agronomist. »
