Macfrut looks to the future

Macfrut looks to the future with optimism. In order to meet the expectations of its target audience, the international trade fair for the fruit and vegetable sector is set to take place in May 2021 as a major face-to-face event, hoping that the Covid-19 emergency will be over by then: the 37th edition of Macfrut is scheduled to be held from 4 to 6 May 2021 at the Rimini Expo Centre. Melon will be the event’s key product, symbolising the quality of Italian fruits and vegetables, and will be discussed and promoted during a series of events involving buyers and visitors.

The first webinar of the Eurocastanea network

Last week, the European Chestnut Network organised its first ever webinar on the current harvest, market prospects in Europe, and the impact of the health crisis. Eurocastanea, the European chestnut network brought online nearly 70 operators from the chestnut sectors: producers, APOs and marketers from 8 countries. Participants from Austria, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Morocco and Chile connected to follow this mini conference on this season’s chestnut production and the impact of the covid-19 on consumption.

Snacking Project is launched, a new consortium designed to develop the market of small apples ideal for consuming as snacks. First tasting tests in October with the first volumes. “We are very happy with this first step and now we have to look to the future with energy and optimism because this is a long-term project”, comments Georg Kössler, Chairman of VOG.

Kissabel progress towards commercial development

The new European Kissabel® apple season has begun. The project partners in the UK, France and Switzerland started harvesting two coloured-flesh varieties: Kissabel® Orange and Kissabel® Yellow. The first variety features skin with an orange/pink pigmentation, intense pink flesh and a strongly flavoured, refreshing taste, while the second has a yellow skin, pink flesh and a balanced flavour.
