New 100% recyclability seal for wood packaging: ECOWOOXÒ

5 October 2023

The total recyclability seal for wood packaging is now a reality. FEDEMCO, the Spanish federation for wood packaging and its components, unveiled the ECOWOOXÒ seal today at the international Fruit Attraction fair in Madrid.

This pioneering European identification seal, certifying the recyclability of wood packaging, was born out of a private initiative driven by the Spanish federation, the largest of all European federations. "Wood packaging is the most sustainable on the market. This fact is still unknown to many companies and most consumers today," says Raquel Aguado, director of FEDEMCO. "With ECOWOOXÒ, we aim to highlight the complete recyclability of our wood packaging. On one hand, we want to provide consumers with a tool to recognise these packages and make responsible consumption choices. On the other hand, we want sustainability-focused companies to use this certification as a differentiating element for their packaging," she adds.

The seal, based on UNE standards, complies with Spanish legislation and anticipates the new European regulations on eco-design, recyclability, and economic valorisation of packaging. It certifies the complete recyclability of each component of the packaging and ensures maximum raw material savings by guaranteeing that the packaging has been manufactured using the minimum material possible without affecting its function. In this way, it ensures minimal waste generation as well as complete recyclability.

"We are very proud of the excellent reception that ECOWOOXÒ is currently receiving among our associated Spanish wood packaging manufacturers. Three companies have already completed the certification process, and more than a dozen companies are in an advanced stage of the process," thanks to a grant from the Generalitat Valenciana, explains Aguado. "Without a doubt, this seal addresses a market need, both in Spain and internationally. Several international companies have shown interest in obtaining certification, and our goal is for this initiative to grow globally," says Aguado.

The wood packaging industry is active in Brussels through its federation Grow International, which is made up of Germany, France, Italy and Spain. In the next two years, FEDEMCO will chair the European federation; the aim is to give impetus to the formation of a strong European lobby.

The most sustainable packaging
Wood is a 100% biodegradable and recyclable raw material already present in nature. Therefore, its transformation into packaging consumes fewer water and energy resources than other types of packaging. Furthermore, its carbon footprint is negative, as sustainable forests from which wood is sourced absorb more CO2 than is emitted during manufacturing.
