Macfrut 2026 opens with a strong first day in Rimini
On Tuesday, 21 April, the 43rd edition of Macfrut officially opened at the Rimini Expo Centre, confirming its status as one of the leading international events for the fruit and vegetable sector. The opening ceremony was led by Francesco Lollobrigida, Italy’s Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry. Ministers from Cameroon, Lebanon, Senegal and Syria also attended, underlining the strongly international profile of the event from the very first day.
During the inauguration, Francesco Lollobrigida stressed that Macfrut is much more than a trade fair – it is a platform for building relationships and strengthening cooperation with countries around the world. He also highlighted the strategic importance of the fruit and vegetable sector for Italy and recalled the significant financial support directed to the supply chain, including more than EUR 2 billion in direct funding, which has generated nearly EUR 3 billion in investments.
The first day of the fair confirmed that Macfrut 2026 is an event with a truly global reach. According to the organisers, the exhibition is hosting more than 900 top buyers from around the world, supported by Agenzia ICE, as well as strong delegations from Northern and Eastern Europe, Brazil and China, including key representatives from Guangzhou and Shanghai. This year’s edition is also placing a strong focus on participation from the Caribbean, South America and Sub-Saharan Africa.
An important highlight of the opening day was the inaugural conference, where new figures on the Italian fruit and vegetable sector were presented. According to Nomisma, the industry includes more than 150,000 companies, operates across 887,000 hectares, and has a production value of EUR 17 billion, accounting for 26% of Italy’s agri-food sector. Exports of fresh and processed fruit and vegetables reached EUR 12.9 billion in 2025, representing 18% of the country’s total agri-food exports. At the same time, experts pointed to two major challenges facing the sector: geopolitical instability and climate change, together with phytosanitary risks.
Once again, Macfrut is demonstrating that its strength lies not only in its international scale, but also in its broad thematic scope. This year’s edition includes dedicated areas focused on water management, nursery innovation, biological crop protection and biostimulation, the berry sector, healthy convenience foods, herbs and spices, and agrivoltaics. The programme also features open demonstration areas, a Start-up Area with 26 companies from around the world, and around 100 events and conferences scheduled across the three days of the exhibition.
The first day of Macfrut 2026 clearly showed that the event remains one of the most important meeting points for the international fruit and vegetable industry, bringing together business, innovation, knowledge exchange and the development of trade relations. The strong presence of international delegations, the high number of buyers and the wide-ranging conference programme all confirm that Rimini has once again become a key hub for the global fresh produce sector.
