IGW, Day 6

24 January 2023
Startup Days, student press conference and young farmers from North Rhine-Westphalia behind the stove - Day 6 of the Green Week is all about the "young wild ones". At the ErlebnisBauernhof in Hall 3.2, young companies from Germany will present their ideas for the food industry and agriculture of tomorrow. At 6 p.m., the best startup will be chosen. At the school press conference, schoolchildren from the region will be asking questions of experts from the fields of agriculture and nutrition, and young farmers will be swapping stalls and fields for show kitchens and conjuring up Westphalian specialties in Hall 5.2.

Number of the day

Visitors will have to walk around 7.5 kilometres if they want to visit all 25 halls at the Green Week.

Together for the forest of the future

In Hall 27, the German forestry industry has set up half a dozen hands-on stations. Not only children learn a lot about wood and climate change here. Ferdinand picks up tree trunk after tree trunk with his grappling tongs, swings them over the basket in front of his machine and loads them there. All virtually, of course. The 24-year-old sits in a so-called harvester simulator, VR goggles in front of his eyes, both hands highly concentrated on the switches.

Ice Cream connects Continents

A Finnish-Argentine love story forms the basis for the ice cream company Caminito Oy, which is making its debut at this year's International Green Week. The vegan strawberry ice cream tastes delicious, soft like soft serve and extremely fruity. "The key is to use enough fruit," explains Sari Laasko, quality manager at Finnish ice cream maker Caminito Oy. 25% pure strawberry is included in the ice cream. Read more

Lucky fish between hotdog wraps and crocodile goulash

The Streetfood Market in Hall 1.2a invites you to feast, experiment and relax. With their lucky fish, the Eichmann family is almost part of the inventory. Jingmei Fan-Eichmann radiates a meditative serenity. Amidst the hustle and bustle at the street food market of the International Green Week, between pork knuckle burgers, Hungarian langoosh and sandwich raclette, the Potsdam native from China repeats the same activity over and over again.

Forest bathing in the hustle and bustle of the trade fair

The booth of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment teaches young and old about ecological habitats and explains their benefits for the climate. Is that cry coming from a bird? Is it a seal? Anyone taking part in the wildlife quiz at the stand of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) in Hall 27 has to rely entirely on their hearing. A painted map provides clues to the habitats of the birds and mammals asked.

One little ship more beautiful than the other

In Hall 8.2, Norway is promoting itself with fine appetizers, fresh cider and traditional products in a new look. Vegans have a rather difficult time here. Everyone else should plan their trip to Norway in Hall 8.2 well in advance. There are too many delicacies here, hot dishes, cold appetizers, many at a tasting price of two or three euros, plus aquavit or apple juice, cider, gin or an honest beer. All from Norwegian production, of course.

Super fruits from Sri Lanka

The island in the Indian Ocean can do more than cinnamon and tea. Its fruits keep you healthy and even serve as a basis for meat substitutes. For Ranjan T. Hanchapola, the matter is clear: Graviola is the new super fruit. The fruit of the prickly pineapple (looks a bit like a green pineapple without the crown of leaves) actually comes from South America and is widespread in Africa. But it also grows quite wonderfully in the tropical climate of Sri Lanka.
